Black Benji – Chosen (Album Review)

Charleston-bred hip-hop artist and entrepreneur, Black Benji, returns to the airwaves with his new EP “Chosen”. His first project release since 2021’s “Self Inflicted.” The EP holds the essence of his journey—a blend of stories, pain, pressure, and unyielding persistence that has propelled him to see himself as not only a  ‘Chosen’ one in the hip-hop realm, but one built and ‘chosen’ to ascend the city.

Through years of output, Benji’s music has been a canvas for his personal evolution, learning from adversities, transforming losses into victories, and devoting himself to elevating his life’s standards and mentality. “Chosen” embodies the spirit of brute Southern hip-hop, resonating with heavy ‘Southern Smoke’ — Atlanta trap production—booming 808s, layered piano melodies, and intricate hi-hat patterns. Benji’s vocal delivery, reminiscent of artists like Kevin Gates and Moneybagg Yo, adds a distinct flair to his powerful delivery and storytelling.

My personal favorite #GxldApproved pick on the project is “I’m On It” (feat Young Kap), which I feel defines the centralized theme of standing on business and remaining true to you through adversity. It not only holds mainstream and radio appeal but also exudes an energy that pays homage to the minds of relentless grind. It’s a testament to OWNING the hustle, staying ON the hustle, and doing so with an undeniable sense of style—a true flex.

As a long time fan/supporter/observer of Charleston hip-hop, I urge you to immerse yourself in the world of “Chosen” by Black Benji. This EP not only marks a significant milestone in his career but also promises a glimpse into the future of #GxldApproved music, keeping our Extra Chill New Music Radar constantly buzzing with with fresh names hailing from every corner of Charleston music.
