Extra Chill is an independent music platform with a blog and community forum, founded in 2011 in Charleston, SC, by a college student with a passion for music and writing. What started as a local project has since grown into a respected journalistic publication and an online meeting ground for music lovers. Now based in Austin, TX, Extra Chill continues to evolve as a grassroots hub for independent music.
Over the years, we’ve become a steady presence in Charleston’s music scene, hosting regular live shows and even launching our own festival—Extra Chill Fest—which ran five times between 2018 and 2024.
In early 2024, we expanded beyond Charleston with the launch of the Extra Chill Community Forum, a space for artists, fans, and industry professionals to connect, discuss, debate, and share what’s good. Since its inception, the forum has grown to 400+ members and counting, fostering a passionate network of independent artists and music enthusiasts.
Today, Extra Chill is organized by location, allowing us to cover music scenes anywhere in the world. Our goal is to continue expanding our reach—building a nationwide hub for independent music and a melting pot of creative voices.
Beyond the community, Extra Chill also dives deep into music history, song lyric analysis, and cultural curiosities, with a special nod to our South Carolina roots. At its core, Extra Chill is an ongoing experiment—constantly evolving with fresh ideas, new perspectives, and a shared love for music.
