Aubrey Key released a music video for his new song “Commando” on Valentine’s Day. The track displays the artist’s signature offbeat, lo-fi acoustic style.
“Commando” is sparse at its opening, with Key singing lightly and playing his guitar. The track opens up into a full band sound as it progresses. Trumpets, courtesy of Wesley Heaton of Daddy’s Beemer, are a surprising and delightful addition. The sometimes-sweet sound of the track is rendered ironic through Key’s lyrics: “My thighs are rubbing together”’ and “Would you like this / If it sounded like shit?”
The video is simple, showing Key in front of wallpaper printed to look like the night sky, sometimes wearing a shirt and strumming his guitar, sometimes shirtless wearing vaudeville-style makeup and a gold tinsel halo. Collaborator Candice Turner, who supplied backing vocals in the song, is also featured shirtless and in matching makeup throughout the video.
