Homemade Haircuts – “Author”

Charleston-based indie outfit Homemade Haircuts released a new track, “Author,” on Thursday. The emo-tinged pop rock song is a reflection on identity and intention.

“Author” features an even, fast-paced beat. Some hazy reverb adds a little grit, but ultimately, the song remains fairly crisp, standing in contrast to the band’s other recent release, “Savor.”

It makes sense that “Author” feels slightly less psychedelic than the more experimental “Savor,” as it was originally recorded by the band in 2021 when they were crafting their debut album. According to an Instagram post, “Author” is “a deep cut that set the tone for Sun Showers, but never quite fit on the record itself.”

The trill of an electric guitar an octave above the rest of the instrumentation adds welcome texture to the track, and the tempo change that comes with the contemplative repetition of “I never finish what I started” is compelling.

A multi-instrumental jam session toward the end of “Author” reminds us how much noise Homemade Haircuts is capable of stirring up.

You can catch the band live on the deck of the Charleston Pour House with former Charleston residents Whitehall and new local band Hollifield on Saturday, September 23rd. In the meantime, stream “Author” below.
