“Fuck LA,” the newest track from Virginia duo Illiterate Light, explores the painful, consuming desire to be home that creeps up after weeks and weeks on the road.
Tongue-in-cheek in its use of language, “Fuck LA” derides city after city in list form, though it’s clear there’s no real anger at a specific place, only at the sense of listlessness that comes from being constantly on the move.
The music video keenly displays this melancholy through images that reveal the grit and monotony of van life: the tedium of shaving in the front seat, the loneliness of a half-eaten stale slice of pizza at a diner.
While the track is simple in structure, the sound feels deep and all-encompassing. One pared-down acoustic guitar strums against the sweeping sounds of deep drums and crooning, wining guitar. A sometimes-garbled voicemail from a loved one adds a touch of uncanny optimism.
“Fuck LA” is the fourth single off Illiterate Light’s upcoming album Sunburned, due out January 27th. Watch the video below.
