SXSW 2024 Review Out Now

As promised, my SXSW 2024 review has been published. In it I discuss not only my experience at the music festival, but also some of the philosophical things that have been on my mind. This includes an in-depth breakdown on the current state of the music industry, the Charleston music scene, and the opportunity that I see for Extra Chill in Austin.

In addition to the SXSW writeup, Extra Chill has also been buzzing with lots of other exciting content.

Charleston hip-hop artist Indi’Gxld sits down with Matt Monday of SWIM to discuss Cultura Festival 2024 and how it stands as a cornerstone event for black creativity and community in Charleston. Jerkweed: South Carolina’s Number One Mediocre Emo Band

Speaking of Coast Records (see that guy on the toilet? Matt Zutell, founder), this week, I published an interview with Jerkweed, a Charleston tribute band performing 2000s pop-punk/emo covers. The group’s origin story goes back to a bonfire at Extra Chill HQ during the summer of 2020, where we all got drunk and blasted emo music in my living room. They play their first-ever show at Charleston Tin Roof Friday night.

The Zombies at Charleston Music Hall

Sarah Grace recalls a magical night seeing the legendary 60s rock group, The Zombies at the Charleston Music Hall, with photos by Joseph Neinstedt. This was a special night by all accounts.

New Brave Baby Album on the Way

Longtime Charleston favorites, Brave Baby, have a new album on the way, their first since 2015. We hung out with them at Lofi Brewing during their music video shoot the other night with Persona La Ave, and caught a clip from their unreleased song “Little Buzz On.”

Find the clip on our Instagram, and stay tuned for more.

Community Corner

It’s not only the blog that’s buzzing. Most popular this week in the Extra Chill Community:

  1. moldy recalls his experience at Texas Eclipse, which has been called “Fyre Fest 2.0” by some attendees.
  2. Members comment on Morgan Wallen’s recent arrest on felony charges in Nashville.
  3. qrisg opens discussion about Mayor Cogswell’s plan to combat homelessness in Charleston, locals chime in.
