Human Resources – “Orange Tree”

Human Resources released their much-anticipated new single, “Orange Tree,” on Friday. It’s the band’s first release since “Millie,” which dropped in 2021.

“Orange Tree” is sonically buoyant yet lackadaisical, embodying the spirit of the end of summer. “Remember when we walked through the garden / You picked a piece of dead fruit off an orange tree / For me,” the song begins, and it’s evident that while the instrumentation and melody feel laidback, lyrically, “Orange Tree” is more nostalgic and conflicted.

Plucky bass and guitar and matter-of-fact vocal stylings contrast with lines like “Feel like I’m going off the rails and I need to quit.” The chorus feels big and bold and made for shouting along, and playful keys are sprinkled throughout the track from start to finish.
