Cry Baby – “Must Be Something”

Earlier this month, Charleston pop act Cry Baby released a new single, “Must Be Something”. It’s a 90s/2000s-inspired track that hits just right for the tail end of summer, with elements of both classic R&B and NSYNC-era boy-band boppiness.

Singer Jamie Gray’s voice is soulful as she chants along to a glittery beat that’s like a shined-up, modern iteration of something that, if you’re a millennial, you might have been obsessed with in elementary school. Is this making you nostalgic? Me too. Even the lyrics bring to mind the confusion of navigating love in the early aughts: “Say my name, or live without it/ don’t bend my heart till it’s gone,” Gray gives an ultimatum. “Oh how long till you see that you’re in love with me.”

It’s a song to listen to in a car packed with more people than seats, on the way to a house party where the dress code is bucket-hat mandatory. It’s guaranteed to make even the non-dancers move a little bit. “Must Be Something” is the third single Cry Baby has released off their upcoming debut EP, Everything I Didn’t Say, which is set to drop August 27.
