The High Divers – “Still Kickin'”

The High Divers are gearing up to release their new Sadler Vaden-produced EP, Ride With You, which will drop just two weeks from today on Friday, June 7th. This morning, they’ve released a new track off the EP, “Still Kickin'”. The track made is debut last week with American Songwriter. “Still Kickin'” is the third song we’ve heard from the new EP thus far, with the other two being “Ride With You” and “Could Not Be Loved”.

The first time I heard “Ride With You” I thought it was one of the best songs that the High Divers had released to date, and I think they’ve managed to top it with “Still Kickin'”. Luke Mitchell’s songwriting here is the most raw that we’ve ever seen from him. The lyrics directly address the car accident that the High Divers experienced while touring through Arizona in June 2017, when their van was hit by a semi truck and they damn near died. Luke sings about the car accident from his perspective, and the lyrics are dark at times, but the tone of Luke’s story is triumphant. The song celebrates being alive, with first-hand knowledge of just how easily it can be taken away. “They cut the glass out / I didn’t save it / cause I’m still kickin'”

Supporting the story of “Still Kickin'” is this 90s-esque rock structure that makes you want to shout the chorus right along with Luke. I’m calling it now, this song is going to hit with the crowd at High Divers shows. The next one here in Charleston is at the Pour House on June 7th, release night for Ride With You, where they’ll be joined by Parker Gispert and Admiral Radio. Tickets here.
