If you’ve been to a local show in Charleston, you may have seen him on stage. If you’ve been to
an event with mouthwatering BBQ, he might have been the one behind the smoker. J9NX is a
familiar face in the Charleston rap scene, bringing a unique sound that sets him apart from the
rest. Hailing from Forest Hills, a neighborhood in North Charleston, he’s built a name for himself
as both an artist and an entrepreneur.

We caught up with J9NX while he was casting his line at one of his favorite fishing spots in
Moncks Corner. Here’s what he had to say about his many passions.

Q&A with Charleston Rapper, J9nx

Extra Chill: It seems like you wear a lot of hats. What’s your story?

J9NX: Absolutely, I wear a lot of different hats. I work hard in many ways. I’ve always been the type to work more than one job and have funds coming to me from multiple directions! From 9 to 5, I’m a kitchen manager; on the weekends, I cater and sell food at local events. At the same time, I’m an artist—I write and record music. Music fuels all my hobbies. I love riding my motorcycle, cooking BBQ, and going fishing on the regular! Yeah, I wear a lot of hats!

Fishing for a PB

What is the biggest fish you’ve ever caught?

J9NX: In the fishing world, we call that a ‘PB’—personal best. My PB is a 43-pound carp. Funny thing is, I wasn’t even carp fishing! I was on a fishing charter in Miami, Florida, targeting peacock bass. Shout out to Urban Legends Fishing for putting me on some great catches!

The Recording Process

What is your recording process like?

J9NX: Pro Tools! Even back in high school, I wanted to use Pro Tools—the industry standard. By the time I’m ready to record, I’ve already memorized all my lyrics and can say them without missing a beat. That makes the recording process so much smoother—less time messing up and more time laying down tracks. Studio time isn’t cheap! With the help of an amazing engineer, Ghost at LYNX Recording Studio, my raw recordings get the mix and master they need. I also record at my home studio and send off the files for professional editing.

Favorite Song

Do you have a favorite song that you’ve written?

J9NX: Honestly, it’s always the next one I write! But as far as what’s out there for the public, I’d have to say “Just Do It Like This.” That song came with my first video and set thetone for my sound—crunk, loud, but with substantial lyrics. Every song hits differently, depending on the vibe and topic, but that one stands out.

Where did the idea for the song come from?

J9NX: “Just Do It Like This” is a montage of everything I do—all the different hats I wear. No matter what I’m doing, I always give my best. Hence the phrase: “Just Do It Like This.”

Future Plans

What do you have planned for the coming months?

J9NX: I want to drop all the unreleased music I’ve been sitting on for the last year as a full project. I’m still deciding whether it will be a mixtape with a nostalgic concept or an actual album, but either
way—stay tuned! There’s more music from J9NX coming soon. I’m also working on more catering events—weddings, birthday parties, local festivals, you name it. Plus, I have some ideas for music videos that incorporate my love for fishing. 2025 is going to be a big year!

Music Picks

Who had the chillest album of 2024?

J9NX: Honestly, I’ve been jamming a lot of singles rather than full albums. But at the beginning of the year, I was bumping Killer Mike’s Michael. Technically, that dropped in ‘23, but it carried over
into ‘24. That album was solid from start to finish!

Conclusion

J9NX is a true multi-hyphenate, balancing his passions for music, food, and fishing with an
unstoppable work ethic. Whether you catch him on stage or behind the smoker, one thing’s for
sure—he’s always giving it his all. Stay tuned for what’s next from this Charleston powerhouse!
