Introducing Jeremiah Jackson: “Soul Power”

Jeremiah Jackson, Austin’s undisputed king of Glam Daddy Blues has just released a new single called “Soul Power” to kick off his July residency at Hotel Vegas (every Wednesday at 6pm). The track is a heartfelt tribute to all of the women and LGBTQ+ folks who inspire him, and others, to keep going every day.

I caught Jeremiah’s set at 13th Floor during SXSW and have been following along ever since. His live show is one of the most energetic I’ve seen in recent times, with Jackson leaving the stage to travel through the crowd wailing on a wireless guitar.

Enjoy the new single, “Soul Power” below, and read on for a Q&A with Jeremiah. The track was recorded with fellow Austin locals, drummer Mikey Uptmore and bassist/producer Dylan “Pickle” Fischer.

Q&A with Jeremiah Jackson: “Soul Power”

Extra Chill: How did you first get into playing music?

Jeremiah Jackson: I don’t remember, I was just a little glam baby. I’ve been writing poetry and lyrics to songs long before I played an instrument. I grew up in a home with a piano so I feel very lucky for that. The thing that influenced me the most was visiting my oldest brother in college and him having the Ziggy Stardust concert movie playing on his tv. I didn’t know you could do that. After experiencing Bowie I started to feel truly comfortable with myself and my presentation.

How did you become the Glam Daddy of Blues?

JJ: It’s simply, “Glam daddy blues” not glam daddy of blues. it’s an amalgamation of everything I love about music and life in general. Everything you love about David Bowie, Tenacious D, and Queens of the Stone Age rolled into one glamorous package.

Tell me about your new single, “Soul Power”. What do you love most about it?

JJ: Soul Power is a unique single for me as it is much lighter than my usual fare. It’s a love song to all the women who have supported me through the years and made my life truly worth living. I love the harmonies in the choruses the most.

How did you link up with Mikey Uptmore and Dylan “Pickle” Fischer?

JJ: I met Dylan in 2014 at SXSW when I was in a different band. I met Mikey when I lived in Waco in 2017 and he started drumming in my band. Dylan did not join in bass until I moved to Austin. I’m spoiled in having what is probably one of the best rhythm sections in central Texas.

What is your favorite thing about the Austin Music Scene?

JJ: There is a strong sense of community and support that you don’t see a lot of other places. If you’re going to be a performer here you have to be great if you want to sustain anything. You can’t just be good.

On a scale of 1-10, how chill is Jeremiah Jackson?
