This past weekend brought a trio of sold out shows to the Windjammer, including the cherry on top, which Extra Chill attended, Dispatch with Maggie Rose on Sunday, July 21st. The longtime independent band has paved their own way over the years and have maintained a dedicated core following that led to a packed crowd on the beach Sunday evening.
Maggie Rose truly shined as the supporting act, even collaborating with Dispatch on two separate covers during the set, âDonât Let Me Downâ by the Beatles and âCrazy Trainâ by Ozzy Osbourne. She is currently touring in support of her latest album, No One Gets Out Alive (2024), which her opening set contained many selections from, including the latest single, âFake Flowers,â which I think is excellent.

I wasnât familiar with Maggieâs music before the show, and she was good enough to make me want to hit the merch table after the set. With an impressive, soulful voice that is full and deep, and a strong band with improvisational rock & funk chops, I was dialed in for the whole set. Also, the roadie who sold me a koozie was wearing a Grateful Dead hat â checks out â and I was glad to see it.
The beachfront stage filled up throughout Maggieâs set, and I know I wasnât the only one giving my first big âhell yeah!â to Maggie Rose that night. By the time she finished, the beachfront venue was filled with people, and soon, Dispatch took the stage.

After kicking off with âWindylike,â Chadwick took a moment to talk about how they went surfing on the beach that afternoon with a friend and his family, and the friend asked them to play âPasserby,â so they did. They rolled on through a few more songs off their 2017 record America, Location 17, including âCurse + Crushâ and fan-favorite âOnly the Wild Ones.â
During this time, I noticed that Maggie Rose had made her way side-stage and was waiting in the wings. They called her out near the end of âOut Loudâ for a fantastic rendition of the Beatlesâ âDonât Let Me Down.â
A little later, the classic song âBang Bangâ featured a medley into the Grateful Deadâs âFriend of the Devilâ and back into âBang Bang.â Then they played the deep cut, âBeto,â before their biggest hit, and the one that even people who arenât Dispatch fans know, âThe General.â This song is nostalgic for me personally, as I remember listening to it at sailing camp growing up.

During the show I kept thinking how The Windjammer is such an ideal venue for a Dispatch concert, and the band did mention that they would be back. Their sound remains very organic after all these years, and it lends itself really well to the environment on Isle of Palms. Chadwick plays his cigar box guitar (and many others), while Brad jumps between guitar, drums, and more.
Maggie Rose returned again for a cover of Ozzy Osbourneâs âCrazy Train,â a fun song to close out the main event. I loved seeing the collaboration with Maggie, they are giving her a spotlight in front of their fan base, which Maggieâs music also appeals to.
Dispatch returned for a three song encore including âLetter to Lady J,â âBound By Love,â and another fan and personal favorite, âOpen Up.â
Overall this was a very good show and Iâm glad to have attended. Steve Aycock was there with his camera, and you can enjoy a photo gallery from the night below.
