This past Saturday, August 9th, Firefly Distillery enjoyed a rainy night of hip-hop with legendary acts Cypress Hill, Atmosphere, Pharcyde, and Lupe Fiasco.
Prior to the show, for most of the morning it was raining like holy hell, torrential downpour in Charleston. By the time the show started, it was still raining but not as bad.
It drizzled on and off for pretty much the whole show, but not enough to make people leave, and while the ground was wet, it didn’t turn to mud.
The crowd eventually filled out the area in front of the stage. If anyone who bought a ticket stayed home, you couldn’t tell.
Cypress Hill needs no introduction. I will say tho’ that their Wiki is a pretty good read. They recently did a show with the London Symphony Orchestra that’s a hell of a listen/watch. As long as they’ve been around, they’ve had a great reputation for putting on a solid show.
Atmosphere had Slug and Ant with them as always, and a third DJ named HEBL, or sometimes “Plain Ole Bill” who is a performer/musician in his own right.
Pharcyde put on a solid show. The crowd obviously knew their music. I was only really familiar with the one hit they had called “Drop,” featuring a Beastie Boys sample.
Lupe Fiasco’s Food and Liquor is a favorite album of mine. The song “Kick, Push” was a cross-genre hit because it appealed to the skateboard community. People who didn’t have much familiarity with hip hop listened anyway because he’s telling a story about skateboarding that hit home with most skaters.
