The Original Man (The O) – “Better Than You” (Video)

The Original Man, better known as ‘The O’, recently released the music video for his song, “Better Than You” on YouTube. The O has been a pillar in Charleston’s underground rap scene for over 10 years. On top of being a conscious lyricist, he has a powerful story as a cancer survivor and CEO of Influence Life Entertainment.

“Better Than You” is a chin up, stare in the face to all oppositions — physical and spiritual. The O keeps it ‘straight cut to the gut’ and does it in a ‘well-suited’ fashion. I like the approach The O and videographer Justin F Hollins took with the visual. The parallel of The O, in a couple of slick suits, against some of Charleston’s grainy rustic backdrops.

The O comes with a new level of #GxldApproved confidence and brings a message and lyrics to match: “Never lost a step, still moving with the Gods that you though was on the shelf/ y’all do it for the GRAM? I did it for the REP/ ‘Willie D’s’ and ‘Soulja Ree’s’, we gon’ march…. step/ bad energy offensively, respectively, defending these/ times when dark minds affecting what is meant to be/ I focus on what is meant for me/ I feel a force so oppressively my ancestors sent for me.”

I dig The O’s style — braggadocios with that classic cadence from the ORIGINAL days of hip-hop. Personally, I miss the days of the competition driven, ‘get with it or get lost’ attitudes that the art form of hip-hop was raised in.
