Runaway Gin – “Mike’s Song” > “Message in a Bottle” > “Weekapaug Groove” (Live 9/30/22)

Charleston-based Phish tribute Runaway Gin released a new 4K quality live video yesterday from their show on September 30th at Aisle 5 in Atlanta. The video showcases their new “Makisupa Police, Man” concept that weaves the music of Sting and the Police in with the songs of Phish and songs played by Phish.

Runaway Gin introduced the “Makisupa Police, Man” concept back in September prior to debuting the concept at the Charleston Pour House on September 24th, the weekend prior to the recording of the new live video in Atlanta.

In the video, Runaway Gin start with Phish staple “Mike’s Song”, keying fans in that “Weekapaug Groove” would be likely be coming soon. However, rather than doing more Phish between the two, the band moves into the 1979 hit by The Police, “Message in a Bottle”.

“Message in a Bottle” becomes a shining moment for the band, and especially for the drummer. Gin always been known for their musicianship, with masterful guitar work from Andy Greenberg and a cast of talent that includes Jennifer Reiser on keys, Tim Khayat on bass, and the star of this video, Sean Bing on drums.

Bing holds down the beat while simultaneously singing lead vocals. He gives the song the energy that it deserves, and even gets the crowd involved. The third verse is especially exciting, with a big “Walked out this morning, don’t believe what I saw!” to kick things off.

Following “Message in a Bottle”, Runaway Gin complete the sequence with a transition into “Weekapaug Groove”.
