Charleston-based rapper Blakk Conway is set to release his debut project this weekend, a 10-track mixtape recorded at The Lab on Johns Island with engineer and producer DJ Edwards. Titled His Name Is Cody, the project introduces Blakk Conway’s hard-hitting style amidst beats from across the musical spectrum.

This morning we are excited to offer an exclusive listen to “All Black Jays”, the first track on the tape. Here Conway pays homage to a badass woman who loves to rock black Jordans, whom Conway always has by his side. This particular woman also happened to be in the studio with him when he laid down this track, giving some extra magic to his performance here.

Spit over an old school, boom-bap beat, “All Black Jays” hits just right for fans of the straightforward delivery and wordplay characteristic of the golden era of 90s hip-hop. Conway makes me think I need to go out and buy some black Jordans, too.

His Name Is Cody offers a variety pack of beats and lyrical styles, like a good mixtape should, though much to our delight there is certainly a focus on old school beats. Couple that with crispy production, and you’ve got a solid debut from a promising new rapper to watch on the scene.

Listen to “All Black Jays” by Blakk Conway below, and stay tuned for the full mixtape dropping tomorrow.
