Play – “GARDENIA”

Up-and-coming Spartanburg rapper Play recently dropped a sprawling new single called “GARDENIA”. At over 7 minutes in length, it features three distinct movements and beat changes, while Play effortlessly switches gears and drops laid-back, philosophical rhymes about life, love, and hip-hop. Play has been releasing music since at least 2017, starting with freestyles on Soundcloud and gradually making his way onto other streaming platforms and taking hip-hop more seriously, with the full-length project Jody dropping in 2020. “GARDENIA” is right up our alley here at Extra Chill; slow and meandering, with thoughtful lyrics as the focal point, and it places Play firmly on our radar as a South Carolina artist to watch in 2021.
