Black Dave has just released the second-to-last installment of his monthly EP series of 2020. In case you’re not familiar, Dave has been releasing a short, three-track experimental EP on the final day of every month for all of 2020. Each EP is created entirely by Dave himself, including the rapping/singing, production, and cover art. They have gotten more and more free-form and experimental as they’ve gone on, leaning further away from traditional hip-hop and closer to genres like hardcore, metal, and more.
EP 000011 uses orchestral and atmospheric production more than any other EP in the series thus far, making use of nature sounds and piano to conjure a thoughtful vibe. On the first two tracks, “Welcome to the Show” and “Seal the 9”, Dave throws in screaming and distorted guitars at points, offering a juxtaposition to the choral surroundings. The final song, “goodnight” is straight bars over a fluttering beat; something that has become more rare as this series has continued.
Listen to EP 000011 below, and stay tuned for the final installment of Black Dave’s monthly EP series dropping at the end of December.
