Premiere: Mary Norris – “Caroline’s Cove”

Singer-songwriter Mary Norris of the Spartanburg-based band Salti Ray will release a new single as a solo artist this coming Friday, February 14th. “Caroline’s Cove” is a thoughtful folk song that highlights Mary’s power as a vocalist, set to string and accented with vocal harmonies, and of course, love. You can enjoy an early listen to the new song on Extra Chill this morning.

“For me, this song is the manifestation of how deeply I am capable of loving another person,” Mary says. “It’s not so much about who you love, but about valuing the love you feel within yourself for another person, even when the circumstances aren’t ideal.”

“Caroline’s Cove” was recorded at the home studio of Kaleb Alexander (DREAMOIR) in Inman, SC. Mary had invited several friends to contribute on the track, including vocal harmonies and a few instrumental parts. With a crew of musicians and friends there on recording day, they decided to forgo a bass drum in favor of some good old-fashioned boot-stompin’. Kaleb set up a mic in his living room and everyone who had come to contribute on the track gathered around to record the stomps.

Listen to “Caroline’s Cove” by Mary Norris below, and catch Mary solo at Greenville’s Whichcraft Taproom on Friday, February 21st.

The full band Salti Ray will be in Charleston on March 19th to play The Royal American with Bizness Suit and Dylan Swinson. According to Mary, they “may or may not be” hitting the studio soon. Learn more and donate to the GoFundMe for their debut EP here.
