Community Pool – “Roses” + “Trip”

Last week, Charleston-based dreampop band Community Pool released their first two songs, “Roses” and “Trip”. This is the band’s debut release, but Community Pool has been the home studio project of Matt “Ice” Varner for a while now, with John Gornati playing drums and Trav Green on keys. When I talked to Ice about the project, he mentioned his ever-growing collection of synthesizers as if they were the fourth member of the studio band. You can certainly hear those synthesizers featured here.

The sound of Community Pool is laid-back and psychedelic, and Ice says that much of their style is formed through experimentation. The band recorded these tracks at their home studio, dubbed The Secret Cottage, with mixing and mastering done by Russ Alt. There is also a full-length record in the works.

In the live setting, they will be joined by a full band that includes the studio folks mentioned above along with Stephen Pane on guitar, Evan Tilson on bass, and AJ Walker on percussion. They’ll also have a projector and lasers to accompany their performance.

Catch Community Pool at Tin Roof on May 11th, and at Big Gun on June 4th. Listen to “Roses” and “Trip” below.
