Happy 16th Birthday to The Charleston Pour House

The Charleston Pour House will celebrate their 16th Anniversary this week. With the completion of their 16th trip around the sun, Poho will host musicians, artists, staff, and fans that helped create a venue that was built to last. We talked to JP Treadaway about the BYOG reunion, Schema and CBDB show, alongside everything else Pour House has to offer. They also have some serious aesthetic upgrades coming along with the help of local artists and their annual Mural Competition.

When the Charleston Pour House opened in 2002 it was really not much more than a dive bar that hosted live music. In the past 16 years it has risen to “One of the last great American music clubs,” according to long time friends the late Col. Bruce Hampton and Jeff Mosier. While the Lowcountry’s only dusty Dead getaway pulls acts of the highest caliber and musicians from every genre, The Pour House does an incredible job keeping it at home. This week will be a showcase of that culture.

On Wednesday, the Deck Stage will host 2 sets from The Reckoning as well as 2 sets of Runaway Gin: A Tribute to Phish, paying tribute to the music that put the paint on walls of The Pour House. Thursday will host rockgrass’s The Hungry Monks; while inside hosts a treat. More local groups will hit the Main Stage that night with Little Stranger teaming up with Human Resources to create “Human Stranger” for Bananaz: A Gorillaz Tribute.

The celebration weekend will kick off on Friday night with a reunion show from Charleston jam act BYOG. Members Blake Zahnd, David Buck, Phil Pasquini, Cory Takach, and JP Treadaway will be taking the stage for the first time in nearly 2 years at one of the places they began their evolution. JP and I linked up while he was rewiring speakers on The Pour House Deck. We discussed the BYOG Reunion, Schema, and the nurturing culture of Planet Poho.

We started the interview at the manifestation of a BYOG reunion, “Blake had moved back to Charleston a few weeks ago so we just figured it would be a good idea.” When asked about the weekend’s sentiments, “Just anniversary and family. My boss Alex gave us a gig on the deck and we kind of built out from there. Started out on the deck playing to nobody.” Shortly after their break up, JP was out of a job and approached The Pour House management willing to work. From there on out JP started a new band called Schema, who has had multiple headlining gigs, and continues to develop skills far beyond his kit.

Check out this BYOG video from 3 years back:

Schema will hit the stage before CBDB on Saturday, September 1st.  CBDB has been coming to The Pour House for years, and with their recent growth they are yet another band that has been evolving along with The Pour House. Be sure to check out Schema on Spotify in preparation for their upcoming EP taken from a live gig.

On Sunday, The Pour House will host their usual Sunday Funday Farmer’s Market with gospel funk powerhouse Kanika Moore and the Motown Throwdown. As the sun goes down The Reckoning will be playing a celebratory Sunday Evening Set on the Deck. Afterwards, Nocturnal Kernalz will open up for a much anticipated album release from Funk You with “What’s On Your Mind.”

To close Poho’s work week, Holy City Heaters will play their jam grass renditions of the jam catalog on Monday while Marshgrass Mamas will play on Tuesday. Wednesday brings another familiar face to The Pour House. Holly Bowling will be playing after The Reckoning with her renditions of live Dead & Phish transcribed onto classical piano. While she usually takes to theaters and churches, her past performances at The Pour House with Matt Butler’s Everyone Orchestra have developed a relationship with The Pour House and their culture.

With all that’s been said, it really is just a usual week for The Pour House. Fresh coat of paint,  Sunday Funday Farmer’s Market, morning and afternoon yoga, and nearly 8 hours of music a day there will be something for everyone to celebrate with this week.
