Cory’s Grilled Cheese Offering Expanded Platform for Underground Artists

You might know Cory’s Grilled Cheese for their dank sandwiches, or maybe you know them as a hotspot for the local hardcore and metal scene. Regardless, as one of the few live music venues on James Island, Cory’s has become an important player in Charleston’s music scene.

Cory’s offers a platform for indie artists that is unlike most of the other venues in town, and especially on James Island, where the Pour House stands as the dominant place to see live music. For people who aren’t looking to hang with the hippie crowd, or are looking for a more intimate setting to see a show, Cory’s is the place to be.

Thanks to the recent partnership between Cory’s Grilled Cheese and Charleston Sky Entertainment, there are now even more opportunities to dive into Charleston’s underground scene at this James Island sandwich shop turned music venue. Charleston Sky took notice of the intimate setting at Cory’s and decided to try expanding that same level of intimacy to a wider range of genres.

To accomplish this, Charleston Sky will be hosting at least two shows per month at Cory’s Grilled Cheese for the duration of 2018. The first show each month will is of a continuous Season Series, and will feature performances by local and touring rock, jazz, or funk bands. The second show each month will be part of the ongoing Hip-Hop Sessions series.

These Hip-Hop Sessions are a great thing for the Charleston music scene, as there are not many opportunities for Charleston’s hip-hop and rap artists to showcase their talents. Through their partnership with Charleston Sky Entertainment, Cory’s Grilled Cheese hopes to offer an expanded platform for these artists.

The next installment of the Hip-Hop Sessions at Cory’s will take place this Friday, February 23rd, and will feature performances by Abstract That Rapper, Ivory Keys, Jeremiah Boone, Do or Dye, Reek and Kash, Dovah, and more. The show starts at 8pm and goes until midnight. Cover is $7 at the door, or $5 with student ID.

According to Charleston Sky Entertainment member Parris Byars, there is also a mini-festival in the works for 4/20 that will feature a full day of live music and local vendors. Confirmed thus far for April 20th are Abstract that Rapper (ft Manchild), Camel Blues Band, Ivory Keys, Anergy, Orange Doors, and Bassghost.

Cory’s Grilled Cheese is a venue to watch in 2018.
